When you develop a disaster plan for your family, it’s important to keep your oral health in mind. If a natural disaster occurs, there is a good chance your dentist won’t be able to be reached. This can be quite troubling if you are having problems with your smile. So, at this point, it’s best to create a disaster plan that can also help your smile. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Richard D. Guthrie, recommends including these things in your plan:

-For a knocked-out or cracked tooth: Find the dentist nearest you for treatment. Your original dentist doesn’t have to treat your smile. It’s important to see any dental professional as soon as possible so you can save the tooth. If you suffer severe facial trauma and pain, please visit a physician or Emergency Room for treatment.

-For a loose or broken dental crown or dental bridge: If the restoration has fallen out of your mouth, try to put it back in place and secure it with over-the-counter dental cement or sugar-free gum. If this isn’t possible, make sure to keep the restoration in a safe place. Until you receive treatment, try to avoid using that side of your mouth when eating.

-For a dental cleaning and exam appointment: If you’re due for your checkup and you aren’t experiencing any pain and discomfort, you don’t need to worry too much about visiting a dentist right at the six-month mark. You can delay your treatment until your dentist is available again.
